ICAO has categorised aircraft in two types to establish whether a particular aircraft is able to use a particular aerodrome.
It has two 'elements', the first is a numeric code based on the Reference Field Length for which there are four categories and the second is letter code based on a combination of aircraft wingspan and outer main gear wheel span.

Based on code E, Boeing 777x cannot be accommodated in any airport if the wing tips are not folded....So the folding mechanism allows it use any airport that allows Boeing 777.
