Instrument Landing System (ILS)

ILS is a precision radio signal navigation aid consisting of two antennas which transmit signals to receivers in the aircraft cockpit.

One antenna, a glide path tower (Glideslope) located next to the runway at the northern end and the other, a localiser antenna at the southern end, which transmit signals.

The localiser (LOC)provides azimuth guidance, while the glideslope (GS) defines the correct vertical descent profile.
The pilot controls the aircraft so that the glide slope indicator remains centered on approach.
